MARTA ANNOUNCES RENAMING OF GWCC/CNN
CENTER STATION TO SPORTS, ENTERTAINMENT, AND CONVENTION DISTRICT STATION
ATLANTA
– The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) announces an
important milestone in the evolution of its rail system with the renaming of
GWCC/CNN Center Station to the Sports, Entertainment, and Convention
District Station, or SEC District Station.
When the station
opened, it served as a primary gateway to the Omni Coliseum and later to CNN
Center, becoming widely recognized as the stop for major sporting events,
concerts, and news headquarters. Generations of Atlantans have referred to the
station by different names such as Omni, Dome, Phillips, and CNN Center. Each
reflected a moment in the city’s growth and the evolving landscape of Downtown
Atlanta. The station has long been a central entry point for major events,
championship celebrations, and some of the region’s most memorable cultural
experiences.
Today, the area
surrounding the station has transformed into one of the most dynamic districts
in the Southeast. Visitors and residents travel through this station to reach
State Farm Arena, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Georgia World Congress Center,
Centennial Yards, the College Football Hall of Fame, and Centennial Olympic
Park. The new name captures the full range of destinations that exist in this
modern era and provides immediate clarity for riders who may be unfamiliar with
historic facility names.
The change is part of
MARTA’s broader systemwide review of wayfinding and customer information.
Renaming the station will support smoother navigation during major events and
improve the overall experience for customers throughout the year. Updated
signage, maps, and digital tools will reflect the SEC District name to ensure a
consistent and intuitive journey for every rider.
This
announcement accompanies a series of customer-focused improvements across the
system. Earlier this year, MARTA completed significant roof repairs at SEC
District Station, reinforcing the structure and enhancing both safety and
comfort for customers. These upgrades support MARTA’s commitment to delivering
safe, clean, and reliable service every day. They also complement larger
modernization efforts including the NextGen Bus Network and Better Breeze fare
collection system, each designed to enhance reliability, accessibility, and the
overall customer experience.
“This station has been
at the heart of Atlanta’s biggest moments for decades, and its new name
reflects the district it serves today,” said Interim General Manager and CEO
Jonathan Hunt. “As our city continues to grow and attract global events, it is
essential that our system is clear, intuitive, and ready to welcome every
rider. The SEC District name, along with the infrastructure improvements we
have completed, strengthens our commitment to providing safe, clean, and
reliable service for both residents and visitors.”
As Atlanta prepares to
welcome visitors from across the country and around the world for upcoming
global sporting and entertainment events, SEC District Station will serve as a
clear and inviting gateway to the energy and excitement of the city. MARTA looks
forward to connecting the world to everything this district has become and
everything it is poised to achieve in the years ahead.
