MARTA Expansion Projects
MARTA’s expansion projects increase accessibility, mobility, and connectivity throughout the Atlanta metro region. Extending across four local jurisdictions, these projects include arterial rapid transit (ART), bus rapid transit (BRT), light rail transit (LRT) and transit hubs. Some examples of expansion project enhancements include:
- dedicated bus lanes
- traffic signal priority for buses
- improved stations/shelters
- pedestrian safety enhancements
- digital signage with real-time updates
- new Breeze kiosks and vending
More MARTA, a transit improvement partnership between MARTA and the City of Atlanta, builds an expanded and integrated regional transportation network addressing current and future transportation needs. Funded by the half-penny sales tax overwhelmingly passed by Atlanta voters in 2016, More MARTA Atlanta is the largest transit investment in four decades – $2.7 billion over 40 years.
MARTA is making groundbreaking investments to significantly expand transit and elevate the travel experience for riders across Clayton County. In addition to advancing the development of a new multi-purpose bus operations and maintenance facility in Forest Park and upgrading the Justice Center Transit Hub in South Clayton, MARTA is excited to continue the work of bringing premium bus rapid transit with the Rapid Southlake and Rapid SR-54 projects.
Expansion Projects are organized by jurisdiction below:
City of Atlanta
MARTA continues to partner with the City of Atlanta through More MARTA to address current and future transportation needs of Atlantans by increasing accessibility, connectivity, and mobility. The More MARTA Atlanta program is aligned with the Atlanta Transportation Plan and the City’s efforts to build upon a layered, integrated, regional transportation network. It includes light rail transit (LRT), bus rapid transit (BRT), and arterial rapid transit (ART) systems, as well as new transit centers, local bus service, and various station upgrades.
Clayton County
The Clayton County Transit Initiative seeks to explore different transit alignments and technology opportunities to improve Clayton County’s transportation mobility, accessibility, and connectivity to and from the metro Atlanta region. For more information visit the Connect Clayton website.
DeKalb County
MARTA continues to work with DeKalb County on a number of projects to meet the mobility, accessibility, and connectivity needs of the community. This work is guided by the DeKalb County Transit Master Plan adopted in 2019. One of the cornerstone projects for this county is the South DeKalb Transit Initiative which addresses current and anticipated needs for high-quality, dependable transit and supports future economic growth.
Fulton County
MARTA and Fulton County collaborate on a number of projects to identify possible transit improvements and enhancements for the county, based on the 2018 Fulton County Transit Master Plan.
