MARTA Leadership Remembers Juanita Abernathy

Jeffrey A. Parker and Freda B. Hardage reflect on the recent passing of former Board member, Juanita Abernathy.

"Juanita Abernathy dedicated her life to meeting the critical needs of all people and ensuring justice and access for all. She served MARTA’s board with distinction from 2001 to 2017, not only as board secretary and treasurer, but as a trusted advisor, voice of the community and conscientious collaborator. Mrs. Abernathy was an advocate for transit equality and helped to shape our goals and vision, especially with respect to customer experience. We are indebted to her for her service and will feel her loss deeply. We offer our condolences to her family and the many others who loved her."

 — Jeffrey A. Parker

"Juanita Abernathy was a trailblazer. She was a wife, mother, teacher, business woman and community activist – all during an era when women were not expected to multitask. She did it all and did it with excellence. MARTA was fortunate to have her as part of its board. She will be greatly missed. We join the long list of friends, business associates and others whose lives she touched in sending condolences to her family. They remain in our thoughts and prayers."
