MARTA ANNOUNCES DELAY IN EAST LAKE STATION’S SOUTH BRIDGE CLOSURE

ATLANTA – The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has announced that the planned closure of the south entrance at East Lake Station for pedestrian bridge replacement has been delayed. The closure, originally scheduled for March 24, 2025, will be rescheduled due to unforeseen challenges. A new closure date has not been set, but MARTA is committed to providing advance notice once it is confirmed.

Despite this delay, significant progress has been made on the East Lake Station Rehabilitation Project, including the full reopening of the north pedestrian bridge and parking lot.

Two key factors have impacted the timeline for the next phase of construction:

  • North Elevator Installation: A major rainstorm in February caused flooding inside the new elevator shaft, delaying the installation of critical equipment. The new north elevator is now expected to be operational in early April. Since the south entrance cannot close until this elevator is fully functional, the overall schedule has been affected.
  • South Bridge Replacement Coordination: The new south bridge, currently being assembled in the parking lot, is nearly twice the length of the north bridge and spans both College Avenue and active freight rail lines. The complexity of removing the old bridge and installing the new one requires additional coordination with external partners.

Customer Station & Service Information:

  • Both entrances and parking lots remain open, though some spaces in the south lot are being used for construction staging.
  • Bus Routes 2, 19, and 34 will continue to operate from the south-side bus loop as scheduled.
  • Elevator access remains on the south side until early April, when the new north elevator is expected to open.

MARTA and its contracting partners, Reeves Young/CERM, appreciate the community’s patience as we work to modernize one of the system’s oldest stations.
