Project Overview
Since 1979, Five Points Station has been the heart of downtown Atlanta and the central transfer point for all four of MARTA’s heavy rail lines (Red, Gold, Blue, and Green). In collaboration with the City of Atlanta through the MoreMARTA program, MARTA is in the process of transforming Five Points into a vibrant city center to improve transit connectivity, safety and the overall customer experience. Improved Customer Experience
- Renovating and updating customer services offices including the RideStore, Reduced Fare Office, Lost and Found Office, and Police Precinct

Current Status
Phase One – Canopy Deconstruction

The concrete canopy deconstruction is officially underway at Five Points Station. The first phase of the Five Points Transformation began in May 2025 with the detour of bus routes to Forsyth Street and the relocation of customer services offices in preparation for this work. Major milestones are outlined below.
Crane Delivery and Canopy Deconstruction
To prepare for canopy deconstruction, crews installed approximately 870,000 pounds of steel on site for structural support.
MARTA and its construction partner, SKANSKA, have been actively dismantling the 50-plus-year‑old canopy, starting with the first major cut and removal of the first piece in the spring of 2026. A larger crane was delivered to support the ongoing work, and crews continue to carefully deconstruct the old canopy piece-by-piece to prepare for the installation of the new canopy.

Perimeter Structure Removal
After removing major portions of the old canopy throughout the spring and summer of 2026, crews are now taking down the concrete beams and supports that formed the perimeter of the old structure.
The removal is happening in small sections around the perimeter of the station. As each beam or support is taken down, crews reinforce the remaining structure to maintain stability. This careful, step‑by‑step approach ensures the station remains safe while the old canopy is dismantled.
Once the perimeter structure is fully removed, crews will move on to taking down the larger central drum, preparing the station for future reconstruction and installation of the new canopy.
Service Impacts
Safely deconstructing the existing concrete canopy requires several changes to the way MARTA customers use the station. These changes are detailed below.
Customer Services
Five Points restrooms are closed. Use nearby stations for restroom access:
- SEC District (Westbound): “SMART” Restrooms near the State Farm Arena side. Use the call box for access.
- Peachtree Center (Northbound): “SMART” Restrooms on north concourse level. Use the call box for access.
- Georgia State (Eastbound): Restrooms on lower concourse level. Find a MARTA employee for access.
- West End (Southbound): Restrooms on lower concourse level. Find a MARTA employee for access.
Rail Access Changes
- Use Forsyth Street entrance for station access. Station entrances at Alabama Street, Broad Street Plaza, Peachtree Street, and federal tunnel for employees remain closed.
- Elevators remain open on the concourse and platform levels.
- Rail service and rail transfers are unchanged. This project will not affect rail schedules, but single-tracking may be required for other MARTA projects.
- Some night closures of the entrances may be necessary during construction. These will be communicated well in advance.

Rider Alert: MARTA launched its NextGen Bus Network on April 18, 2026. The following routes now serve Five Points:
- Route A: Rapid A Line
- Route 3: Martin Luther King Junior Drive
- Route 10: AUC / Hollywood Road
- Route 20: South DeKalb / Downtown Atlanta
- Route 21: Memorial Drive ITP
- Route 22: Glenwood
- Route 42: McDaniel Street / Pryor Street

Project Funding
The project will cost approximately $230 million and is funded through the More MARTA Atlanta half-penny sales tax, with $13.8 million from the state of Georgia, and a $25 million Federal RAISE Grant, with remaining support from the MARTA core penny.
