MARTA Expands its TOD Portfolio with E. Co at Avondale Station

MARTA, in partnership with Columbia Residential and Cortland Partners, broke ground earlier this week on E. Co (E Dot CO), a 7.7 acre Transit Oriented Development (TOD) at the Avondale Station, which was one of the agencies first rail stations to open in the summer of 1979.

The newest TOD is a pedestrian-friendly environment that will include office space, dining, entertainment and retail options. The commercial district, a central plaza with ample sidewalks and greenspace, will join the collection of mixed-use housing units providing affordable independent living for seniors, more than 300 market-rate apartments and condominiums.

“E. Co will be a welcome addition to the already vibrant downtown Decatur, and will mesh well into the fabric of the community,” said MARTA GM/CEO Keith T. Parker. “Almost 40 years ago, this area had a renaissance with the addition of the Avondale Station. We’re excited to add to the convenience of this in-town neighborhood with our newest TOD.”

Already a community fixture since 1979, the Avondale Station can boast that the first MARTA train made its way to the Georgia State Station in June of that year.

To help commemorate the second TOD to open this year MARTA will recognize several who began their careers at the agency in 1979 and are still contributing to the Authority’s success. The employees are Claudia Cowan-Daniel; Arluther Deadwyler; Coy Dumas; Joseph Franklin; Gary Graham; Kenneth Higgins; Lekha Mukhurjee: Shirley Philpopt, Robert Pless; Billy Richards; Willie Roseberry; Samuel Smith; Jean Starling; Terry Steerman; Verna Stone and Harold Turner.

According to Parker, these employees have been part of several benchmarks in MARTA’s history, especially those highlight our agency’s growth and development.
